Two acres of barren land, the village said, and they said it the way you talk about a grave.
Mei walked her boundaries at dawn with a stick and a piece of charcoal, and made her plan the way she had once made field plans for a whole province. The lower acre: legumes first, to feed the soil before she asked it to feed anyone. The upper slope that everyone called cursed: terraces, cut small, and the stream diverted along a contour ditch so the water walked instead of ran.
Her younger brother followed her at a distance, carrying the basket, watching his sister argue with a hillside.
"You cannot eat beans forever," he said.
"No," Mei agreed, driving her marker stick in. "But the soil can. One season of beans, and this field will grow anything. The land is not barren, little brother. It is hungry. There is a difference, and the difference is work.""
He was quiet a moment. Then he picked up the second spade — the heavy one — without being asked.
By noon the first terrace line was marked, and two neighbors had stopped pretending not to watch.

Reading this at 2am was a mistake, I have work tomorrow 😅
The pacing is perfect, zero filler.
Certified page-turner.
I came for the cover, I stayed for the story.
The art in this chapter is unreal.
The foreshadowing in this series is criminal.
