Living in the Cross house was, Elena decided, exactly like living in a very expensive hotel where the staff had been instructed to pretend she did not exist.
Her husband on paper was a ghost with a schedule. He left before she woke and returned after she slept. They communicated through the housekeeper, through a shared calendar, and once — memorably — through a sticky note on the refrigerator that read, in severe capitals: THE CAT IS NOT ALLOWED IN THE STUDY.
She had not known there was a cat.
The cat found her on the ninth day, an enormous grey creature with the bearing of a retired admiral, and followed her into the library Julian had forgotten to forbid. That was where he found them both at midnight — Elena asleep in the reading chair with a contract file on her lap, the cat asleep on the contract file.
Julian stood in the doorway for a long moment.
"You are not what the reports said," he said finally.
Elena, not fully awake, answered with the truth: "Neither are you. The reports said you never smile."
"I am not smiling."
"You are doing something adjacent to it."
He left before she could see it properly. But the next morning, the sticky note on the refrigerator had been replaced. It read: THE CAT IS ALLOWED IN THE LIBRARY.

The emotional damage is real but I keep coming back.
The tiny details!! Did anyone else notice?
Side characters carrying as usual.
This is the series I recommend to everyone.
Slow burn done RIGHT.
If this ever gets dropped I will riot (politely).
The worldbuilding keeps getting deeper.
The art in this chapter is unreal.
THE CAT IS ALLOWED IN THE LIBRARY. He is down bad and does not know it yet.
The cat sticky note arc is elite character development, I said what I said.
