The Last Magic Academy

Chapter 2: The First Lesson

⚑ Log in to report

The first lesson was not held in a classroom.

Professor Aldous led the first years down past the kitchens, past the boiler room, down a stair that Tomas was quite certain had not been there at breakfast, to a door of black iron with no handle.

"Magic," the professor said, "is not a tool. Tools do not argue with you." He pressed his palm to the door, and the iron sighed and swung inward on lamplight and the smell of old paper. "Magic is a conversation. Most of you will spend four years learning to shout. A few of you will learn to listen."

Inside was a library that could not possibly fit inside the hill the academy stood on, and at its center, under a dome of glass, a tree grew upside down from the ceiling, its silver roots drinking the light.

Tomas heard the voice again — the one under the bell — clear as a whisper at his ear: AT LAST. A REED WHO LISTENS.

"Professor," he said faintly. "The tree knows my name."

Professor Aldous did not turn around. "Then I suggest," he said, "that you be very polite to the tree. Lesson one begins now."

"Magic is a conversation" is the best first lesson in any academy story, period.

Wholesome. That is the review.
